Gustav Markkula (Collaborator)
Chair in Applied Behaviour Modelling at the Institute for Transport Studies, University of Leeds
Gustav applies quantitative methods and models to the study of human behaviour and cognition in road traffic.
He has spent more than a decade as a researcher in the automotive industry (Volvo), and joined the University of Leeds in 2015 to further develop his cross-disciplinary research on human behaviour modelling, combining state of the art cognitive neuroscience and machine learning methods.
Since then, he has worked as a principal investigator and co-investigator on projects funded by the EPSRC, the Wellcome Trust, the EU, and others, modelling for example how multi-sensory integration in driving simulators affects drivers’ vehicle control, how drivers take over control from semi-automated vehicles, the brain mechanisms underlying collision threat detection and steering, and how human pedestrians and drivers interact to resolve space-sharing conflicts. He collaborates with and acts as a scientific advisor for a number of companies, in the automotive industry and elsewhere.
