Fan is a senior research scientist at Honda Research Institute EU and a visiting researcher at Imperial College London. Formerly an Eric and Wendy Schmidt AI in Science Postdoctoral Fellow funded by Schmidt Futures, he earned his Ph.D. from Imperial College London under the supervision of Prof. Yiannis Demiris.

His research focuses on a wide range of machine learning algorithms applied to general robot manipulation, with work published in Science Robotics and IEEE Transactions on Robotics (T-RO). He has received multiple accolades, including first place in The UK Best PhD in Robotics Award 2020, hosted by Queen Mary University of London, and Best Research Paper (Early Career Researcher) at the 2025 AI & Robotics Research Awards, organised by TAS Hub, Responsible AI UK, and the Royal Society.
