Claire’s role as a Data Annotator involves annotating data collected on Edinburgh’s streets by the Assistive Driving Team.

Tell us about your journey before you joined the Centre for AI in Assistive Autonomy?
This work follows on from my previous job at FiveAI where I worked closely with the engineering and research teams to ensure the quality and accuracy of data used across the company. I was generating high-quality, accurate training data for lane boundary detection / 2D object detection / 3D object detection, working with camera and stereo data, LiDAR and Radar.
I was also quality controlling and fixing data of varying qualities from internal and external providers and managing that feedback pipeline.

What motivates you to work in this area?
I have worked in various research settings over my career mainly in an administrative capacity and only moved over to autonomous driving 8 years ago. The chance to work in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment that could ultimately make a difference to people’s lives, really excites me.

Also, being a Data Annotator involves very repetitive work, which I love.

What do you love about Edinburgh?
I live in Gloucestershire and work remotely, which means I rarely get to Edinburgh, however, when I do get up to Edinburgh, I do love the haggis from the Whiski Rooms on North Bank Street.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
In my spare time I volunteer at a weekly community lunch at my church, and I love to play board games with friends.
