Emanuele De Pellegrin
Research Associate in Assistive AI for Autonomous Driving
My research focuses on assistive artificial intelligence for autonomous driving systems. I develop and evaluate AI solutions using real-world data and advanced simulation environments. The goal is to improve the safety and accessibility of an automated vehicle’s autonomy stack, with a particular emphasis on aiding individuals who require assistance in difficult driving situations.
Tell us about your journey before you joined the Centre for AI in Assistive Autonomy?
My academic journey was a roller coaster! Started with a BA in Chemistry in Rome, I moved to Scotland in 2018 to pursue a Master in AI. I joined the Edinburgh Centre for Robotics (ECR) in 2020 for a PhD in Robotics and Autonomous Systems and worked in many different projects. I have worked on robotic applications for assistive living, autonomous driving, robotics teleoperation, automated planning and robotics simulation.
What motivates you to work in this area?
I have always had a passion for robotics with the purpose of helping humans; to this day, this remains the primary driving factor behind my academic choices and career. Plus, I can fulfil my childhood dream of building and working with robots!
What do you love about Edinburgh?
My love for Scottish history started in my teenage years. To be in Edinburgh, working on something I’ve dreamed about for so long, is truly a dream come true. I love the city’s multiculturalism, openness, and welcoming atmosphere.
