Professor Ram Ramamoorthy to Lead Groundbreaking Centre for AI for Assistive Autonomy

Edinburgh, UK – 24 October 2024

The University of Edinburgh is proud to announce that Professor Subramanian Ramamoorthy has been awarded the prestigious Turing AI World-Leading Researcher Fellowship, securing a £6 million grant to establish a pioneering new research hub: the Centre for AI for Assistive Autonomy.

Based in the School of Informatics, this bold new centre will place human experience at the heart of AI and robotics research. Under Professor Ramamoorthy’s leadership, the centre will develop cutting-edge AI tools for autonomous systems that are person-centred and individually adaptive, aiming to transform how technology supports people in everyday life.

A Vision for Human-Centred AI
The Centre for AI for Assistive Autonomy will explore how intelligent systems can collaborate with people in meaningful, safe, and effective ways. Potential applications include:

  • Robots for personal care and feeding, supporting individuals with daily tasks.
  • Surgical robots that can perform complex procedures while coordinating seamlessly with human surgeons.
  • Enhanced autonomous driving systems that better understand and respond to human behaviour.
